Ghadir Khum:
After performing the Hajj, he bade farewell to his native Makkah and set out for Madinah. When the great procession reached the place from where the routes of the different caravans coming from various points of Arabia normally parted, suddenly the signs of divine revelation appeared and he stopped at a place called al-Johfah near the spring (ghadir) of Khum. The Archangel Gabriel came with the following verse in order to impress the urgency of the divine command:
“Oh Messenger! Deliver what bas been revealed to you from your Lord; and if you do it not, then you have not delivered His message, and God will protect you from the people; surely God will not guide the unbelieving people.” Holy Quran (5:67)
At once the Prophet ordered the whole party to be assembled, even summoning back those who had already left, for he had an important message to be delivered. A pulpit made of camel saddles was hastily set-up. Ascending it, he delivered a sermon asking the people to be witness that he had faithfully performed the task of prophethood entrusted to him by the Almighty.
The multitude cried in one: “We bear witness Oh Messenger of God.” He asked, “who in their opinion was more worthy of obedience than their souls, to which they replied that God and His Prophet know better?” Then he said: “Oh people! God is my Mawla (Master) and I am the Mawla (master) of believers.”
“Verily Oh Prophet of God,” came the unanimous reply.
Prophet Muhammad
“For whomsoever I am Mawla (master), this ‘Ali is his Mawla (master)...” Thrice he proclaimed these words before descending the pulpit, relieved by having performed the great task which would save the Ummah from going astray. The great multitude of Muslims surged towards ‘Ali ibn Abi Taleb
Gabriel descended again with another revelation, showing that the Almighty was pleased with His Prophet for having excellently performed the great final mission to mankind.
“... Today have I perfected unto you your religion and completed upon you My blessings and approved for you Islam as your religion...” Holy Quran (5:3)
This most important task ensured the continuity of divine guidance. Since the Prophets were divinely appointed, so should be the successors or trustees of the Prophets, especially so in the case of Islam, which is the final message to the human race.
All scholars and historians have testified that the event of Ghadir Khum did take place, and moreover books of Hadith are witness that on many and occasion, the Prophet had emphasized his cousin’s pre-eminence, over all other Muslims.
The Prophet’s Death:
Two months after his return to Madinah, the Messenger of God fell ill; Madinah wore a look of gloom, because for a fortnight, the Prophet of Islam was confined in bed. The dawning of 28th of the lunar month of Safar proved to be fateful, for on that day the ‘Mercy to the worlds’ although weak with fever made his way to the mosque to lead the prayers, which also proved to be for the last time. Following a brief speech he returned to the house and after giving necessary instructions to his divinely ordained successor Imam ‘Ali
God, through His last and greatest Messenger has revealed the perfect and the most comprehensive set of laws for the entire human race, a constitution, which is capable of catering to the needs of all generations till doomsday. Now the need for further revelations will no more arise, for the Almighty in His eternal Wisdom has embodied each and everything in the Holy Quran and taken upon Himself the responsibility of guarding it from interpolation. Moreover the Prophet practically showed the implementation of divine laws. The Quran together with the Prophet’s Sunnah (traditions) is to remains a guiding light for all mankind, and to ensure their correct meaning and application, God granted the leadership of the Ummah to the Prophet’s infallible household, the Ahlul-Bayt, who are the torch bearers of guidance for all Muslims.
Prophet Muhammad
Today the grave of the Prophet is the site of pilgrimage and veneration for Muslims from all over the globe.

‘Eid al-Ghadir
I extend my heartiest greetings and felicitations to Imam al-Hujjah (AJ) on this auspicious day of Ghadir. To all the followers of Ahlul-Bayt
The 18th of Dhul-Hijjah marks the symbolic occasion of ‘Eid al-Ghadir on the Islamic calendar. To this day, we recognise the date as being a day of change and progression on the path towards the further spread of Islam. The events that took their course on that day led to Imam ‘Ali
The chants of Labayk Allahumma Labayk, which means “Here I am Oh God, here I am we obey You,” was heard from the deserts around Makkah. The Holy Prophet alongside around a 100,000 of his followers arrived at a place by the name of Ghadir Khum, halfway between Makkah and Madinah. They were on route to Madinah after completing the Hajj pilgrimage for that year of 10 AH. The groups were brought to a standstill whilst God revealed a verse to the Holy Prophet. It read, in al-Maedah 5:67, “Oh our Messenger! Deliver what has been sent down unto you and from your Lord; and if you do not, then you have not delivered his message…” In this strong verse of authority, God was referring to the Holy Prophet declaring Imam ‘Ali as his successor. Showing no signs of questioning, the Holy Prophet followed up by instantly mounting his pulpit.
He started his sermon off by asking his followers, “Oh my people! I am going to be recalled shortly and I must comply. I shall be interrogated and you also shall be interrogated. What will you say then?”
The entire audience answered: “We shall bear witness that you did convey to us the message of God, and tried your best to guide us on the right path and always gave us good console. May God bless you with a good reward.”
The Prophet proceeded:
“Why do you not bear witness that there is no god but God and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger, and that Paradise is true, Hell is true, Death is true, Resurrection after death is true, that the Day of Judgement will doubtlessly come and that God will raise to life the dead from their graves?.”
They said: “Oh Yes! We bear witness to all this.”
Following on, the Holy Prophet asked,
“Do I wield authority over your souls more than you do?”
Once again, as a group, his followers replied,
“Certainly it is so, Oh messenger of God.”
With no doubt in his mind, the Holy Prophet asked Imam ‘Ali to come up. He held his hands high above the rest, and brought him high enough for all to see, and said:
“Oh God! You also may witness.” Then he declared: “Oh my people! God is my Mawla and I am Mawla of the faithful and I have superior right on and control over their lives. And this ‘Ali is the Mawla of all those of whom I am Mawla. Oh God! Love him who loves him and hate him who hates him.”
He further said:
“Oh my people! I will precede you and you also shall arrive at the pool of Kawthar, the pool wider than the distance between Basrah and Sana’a, and there are on the pool as many goblets of silver as stars. When you shall reach me I shall interrogate you about your behaviour towards the two in-valuable assets after my death. The major asset is the Book of God, the Mighty and Glorious, one end of which is in the hand of God, the Exalted, and the other end of which in your hands. Grasp it tightly and do not go astray and do not change or amend it. The other asset is my Progeny, who are my Ahlul-Bayt. God the Gracious and Omniscient has informed me that the two will not part from each other before they reach me at the pool.”
This great declaration on the Holy Prophet’s part was greeted with an honourable vow of allegiance from all who were observing. Male followers shook hands, whilst women placed their palms in water to show their own respective allegiance towards the man who they now knew would be their next leader. Even the likes of ‘Umar, a man who later on became the caliph, admitted, “Congratulations to you, Oh the son of Abu Taleb. You have become the Mawla of all the faithful men and women.” This declaration resulted in another verse being revealed in the Holy Quran. It was revealed in Maedah, 5:3, “This day I have perfected for you, your religion, and have completed my favour on you, and have chosen for you Islam, as religion.”

speaking of this, my parents were kufar, yet, I came to know and love moula Ali just the same, and follow in truth as do you, so, I want to remind you of the hadith which says that a momin can be born to a kafir and a kafir can be born to a momin.
May our life and our death be for our Imam Ali

Ghadir-e-Qum...one of the most important Eids for Shi'as. One couldn't be happier for it was the day our religion was most perfected. But what it very important to note is that although many Hadiths state that this event did take place, (which means they believe that the Prophet (S) did named Imam Ali
his successor), the Sunnis still fail to agree that Imam Ali
should have taken on the caliphate as oppose to Abu Bakr. So either there are differentiating views of Hadiths between the Sunnis, or the Sunnis just don't read their Hadiths

Brother SFN, some of them have explained Mawla in this context to mean "Friend"
Meaning the Prophet stopped hundred of thousands of Muslims, old young women, etc. in the blazing hot desert to let them sit on hot stones in order to listen to Prophet telling Ali he is the friend of all believers. And that then Omar congratulated him on being the "friend" of all believers.
When Ali (a) in many other of their traditions is praised much more without such a huge crowd following and the Quranic verse was used by the Prophet where he quoted the Quran over authority over the believers
The Shiite claim is that this is just one incident where Ali was chosen as his successor, and that the Moslems also congratulated him and Omar also, which seems logical in a setting like this.

Besmehi,
The event of Ghadir, in its totality, is by far the very cornerstone of true Islam. No wonder, that it has been historically targeted and has been ferociously under attack from all corners, openly and clandestinely.
As the holy Koran notes that Allah conferred Abrahim (a.s.) to be Imam (leader) over all mankind, after Abrahim (a.s.) successfully proved himself in devotion through excruciating trials. Abrahim (a.s.) was aware that this can only be found in his progeny, therefore, he sought Allah's confirmation in this by posing the question to this effect. Allah confirmed that it was so, yet with the exclusion of transgressors. In essence, the Imams over all mankind will be exclusively from the progeny of Abrahim (a.s.), although, they posses the special qualification of being pure from all transgressions - large or small, in belief or in conduct, personal or social, against God or against the creation, etc. Imams are therefore, infallible, pure, and of the progeny of Abrahim (a.s.).
Ghadir underlines the manifestation of that promise, moreover, it is the very beginning and the dawn of all that the Messenger of Allah Mohammad (s) worked for and sacrificed of himself, in order to materialize. The Messenger of Allah (s), was both Rasul (deliverer of message) and Imam (implementer and leader). Yet, he was the seal of messengers who completed the message at Ghadir. However, leadership continues after him, as there is no mention anywhere - in the Koran or Hadith nor in previous books - that he is the seal of Imams. Ghadir is living proof that pure Imams of the progeny of Abrahim (a.s.) are none but the Messenger of Allah Mohammad (s) and the twelve Imams that the Messenger of Allah (s) announced in detail and openly to all people - over a hundred thousand of them - and required them all to pledge their allegiance to Imam Ali (a.s.).
So, Imamat (leadership) is the greatest and the most important tenet of Islam and the most important sunna (tradition) of Rassul Allah (s). Therefore, those who have decapitated the most important tenet and pillar from the body of Islam, they have rendered all the rest of the tenets and traditions useless.
Now that we are waiting for the twelfth Imam (a.s.), it should be realized that waiting is nothing but purification and preparation of the soul, the mind, the body, and all conduct, etc. Waiting is therefore, the path toward worthiness, in order to be accepted into the circle of the pure.
